As the Diamondbacks await word on the severity of Shelby Miller’s elbow injury, they took their first step toward replacing him in the rotation – at least in the short term – by announcing right-hander Zack Godley will be promoted from Triple-A Reno to start on Wednesday night against the San Diego Padres.

And while that decision means right-hander Archie Bradley will be sticking in his current role in the bullpen, the Diamondbacks say the move is less an indication of how they view Bradley in the big picture and more about his readiness to make a start this week.

That is, more than a month removed from his most recent start and nearly three weeks removed since the last time his pitch count exceeded 40, the Diamondbacks didn’t think the time was right to move Bradley back into the rotation.

“We’re going to stay where we are right now and reassess,” General Manager Mike Hazen said.

Through the season’s first three weeks, Bradley has been the Diamondbacks’ best pitcher. Shifted into a relief role to start the year because the club had no vacancies in the rotation, he has given up just one run in 11 1/3 innings, exhibiting improved stuff across the board, including a mid-to-high 90s fastball and more effective secondary pitches than he’d had in the past.

But despite the success he’s had in relief, both Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo said they still view Bradley as a future starter.

“We came into spring training with six starters knowing that things could happen,” Hazen said. “Things didn’t happen in spring training, but they just did. Now, we’ve shifted gears for a few weeks. So we’re going to reassess it. We’ve always held that in the back of our mind that, long-term, (Bradley) was going to impact our rotation.”

One possibility, Hazen said, is for the Diamondbacks to look to build up Bradley’s pitch count without taking him out of his relief role, giving him incrementally longer appearances until he’s ready to step into the rotation.

“Once we made the decision to put him in the bullpen, we knew that we were going to have to figure out sort of a strategy back out of it if we wanted him to start – to do it safely for him,” Hazen said. “The team is, obviously, of a large importance, but his well-being and health is of the most importance, too.”

The other factor, of course, is Miller. He’s on the disabled list and has received multiple medical opinions on his injured elbow, so even the most optimistic scenario probably calls for him to miss several starts, if not several months.

The Diamondbacks are hoping to have more concrete news on Miller’s situation on Wednesday, and Hazen acknowledged that Miller’s timeline could play a part in how they handle Bradley.

But, for now, they seem content with letting things play out and charting a course based off that. If Godley throws well, perhaps he sticks in the rotation. If opportunities arise to stretch out Bradley, maybe that’s the way they go.

And, in the meantime, they’ll continue to hope for the best with Miller, who visited with Los Angeles-based orthopedist Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Tuesday.

“Without speculating, we’re all being very optimistic,” Lovullo said. “Until we get a full diagnosis on Shelby, we’re going to just kind of tread some water right now. That’s a good way to look at it.”
