The Diamondbacks finalized their 25-man active roster following Friday night’s 9-4 exhibition loss to the Cleveland Indians, reducing the squad by three players two days before their season opener on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants.

Right-handed reliever Silvino Bracho was reassigned to Triple-A Reno and a pair of other relievers – right-hander Jake Barrett (shoulder inflammation) and lefty Steve Hathaway (shoulder bursitis) – will open the season on the 10-day disabled list.

The moves mean that left-hander Andrew Chafin claims the final spot in the bullpen and backup outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker has won the final spot on the Diamondbacks’ bench.

The competition between Chafin and Bracho was close, manager Torey Lovullo said.

“It was a very tough decision,” he said. “Both guys were starting to throw the ball really well. I think if you throw out the outing Chafin had against San Francisco, his numbers would have been totally different. But inside of each appearance, the fastball command and the velocity was coming back. The secondary pitches were starting to show a little more consistency and we like the idea of having a second lefty in the bullpen.

“But because of the way Bracho was really starting to attack hitters and getting quick, easy outs, as a group we really started taking notice. We wanted to let that one play out for as long as possible, and we had discussions all the way up until today. We knew both were not going to pitch today and we had some really good internal discussions and that was the final decision that was made today as a group.”

Lovullo also revealed on Friday night that Chris Owings will get the bulk of playing time as the team’s starting shortstop, but he wouldn’t rule out Nick Ahmed getting his fair share of starts, either.

“Nick Ahmed is not a backup infielder,” Lovullo said. “He’s going to get a number of starts at shortstop. A backup, in my opinion, is somebody who is there in case. Nick Ahmed is going to get a number of starts, as is C.O. at shortstop.

“… C.O. is going to play some in right and that’s going to allow Nick Ahmed to pick up those games at shortstop.”

Sunday, fun day

Lovullo will be officially be making his major-league managing debut in Sunday’s season opener at Chase Field, and the first-year skipper said he will have about 75 family and friends in attendance to help mark the occasion.

“I’m a fairly emotional guy. I lost my dad in January, so I’m going to be thinking a lot about him,” Lovullo said. “I’ll have 75 people here that are coming from six or seven different states. … It couldn’t be any more of a special occasion for me because of what they are doing to get here. It’s been a long journey for a lot of people around me in my life, so for me to be able to touch them a little bit and share with them that I’m going to be thinking about them throughout the course of nine innings, it’s going to be a nice way for me to connect with them and I’m looking forward to it. They’re coming in by the busload.

“You don’t know how hard it is for everybody to stop what they’re doing and put their lives on pause for this moment, so I want to make sure I acknowledge how it’s making me feel that they’re going to be here to support me, especially my family.”
