The Coyotes had hoped that former captain Shane Doan would decide before the 2016-17 season, or during the latter stages of it, that this would be his last in the NHL.

They wanted to celebrate him and commemorate his impressive 21-season career by giving him a memorable farewell.

But the special sendoff never happened.

“He wasn’t willing to do that, and you have to respect the player’s decision,” team owner Andrew Barroway said.

Toward the end of the season, the Coyotes decided they wouldn’t offer Doan a new contract after his previous one-year deal expired this summer. While Barroway is confident it was the right move to make for the hockey team, he acknowledged Thursday he should have been the one to deliver the news to Doan instead of General Manager John Chayka and apologized for a dismissal that received heavy backlash.

“He’s going to be a 41-year-old winger,” Barroway said. “We wish him the best. He’s the bedrock of this franchise. He’s been here in the Valley since Day 1. Great guy, lovable, personable. In our mind, he wasn’t a right hockey fit for the team.

“Do I wish it would have been handled differently? Yes I do. Do I wish Shane would have retired at the end of last year? Yes. That’s his decision, and the mistake I made was I should have flown across the country to tell Shane this personally. That was my bad.”

Doan was told the decision to move on from him was Barroway’s, and although Barroway said he’d accept responsibility for it, he also said the previous ownership group, Chayka and former coach Dave Tippett agreed.

“Everyone was on board with it except Shane,” Barroway said.

The Coyotes were told “90 percent” Doan was going to retire and announce it in his own time, Barroway said, but then Doan went “the other way.” They had to tell him and instead of flying in from New York to have that conversation with Doan, Barroway had Chayka do it. The two met at First Watch in Scottsdale June 17.

While owners don’t usually tell players in-person they won’t be offered a new contract, Barroway said, “Shane Doan is special and different, and I should have recognized that and made the extra effort to do it myself. Would the same result have happened? Probably. But I should have done it.”

The Coyotes would love for Doan to rejoin the organization is some capacity, Barroway said, but Doan hasn’t made a decision on his future. Doan, who had six goals and 27 points last season, said earlier this summer he was still mulling whether or not to continue playing or to retire. The 40-year-old has yet to sign elsewhere.

“We all agree he’s a Valley icon,” Barroway said. “We disagreed on the value he could add as a hockey player to our franchise at 41 years old.”

Doan had become synonymous with the Coyotes and holds a monopoly on the record book as the franchise’s most successful player, but that history wasn’t reason enough to keep Doan around in Barroway’s eyes.

“Our job is to put the best team we can on the ice to win,” he said. “This is not about lovable losers in Arizona, who put out people who they like and they skate around and lose with dignity. We’re here to win. It’s a cultural change, and putting Shane Doan on the ice was not the right way to generate victories for us in this upcoming season.”
