The Cardinals depth chart at running back became clearer on Monday with the news that Andre Ellington has re-signed with the team.

Ellington, an unrestricted free agent, agreed to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not immediately available.

Ellington was one of three Cardinals running backs on the free agent market. Chris Johnson has said he is looking for opportunities elsewhere, and Stepfan Taylor remains available.

The Cardinals now have David Johnson, Andre Ellington, Kerwynn Williams and Elijhaa Penny under contract for the upcoming season.

Coach Bruce Arians has used Ellington in a hybrid role over the four years, and Ellington often has lined up as a receiver. That role could grow in 2017.

A sixth-round pick by the Cardinals in 2013, Ellington has had an up-and-down career. He’s won the starting job and he’s lost it.

He played in 16 games last season but carried just 34 times for 96 yards and didn’t score a touchdown, all career lows. His 12 receptions were his fewest in four seasons.
