Center fielder Ketel Marte pulled up in apparent pain on his way to first base and needed help off the field in the sixth inning on Wednesday night, an ominous development for the Diamondbacks’ best player.
Marte hit a ground ball to third base and grabbed at the back of his right leg just before reaching first base. He fell over in a heap after passing the bag.
If Marte’s injury is serious, it would be a massive blow to the Diamondbacks, who were banking on him returning to his 2019 levels this season. Through five-plus games, Marte had looked like his old self, going 12 for 26 (.462) with four doubles and two home runs.
