Phoenix Sunnyslope High School’s football team will have to quarantine through Oct. 26, after the administration was informed on Thursday of a positive COVID-19 test from a player in the program.
Sunnyslope was scheduled to play at Paradise Valley on Friday night and Cave Creek Cactus Shadows next Friday.
A Sunnyslope parent forwarded an email to The Arizona Republic from Sunnyslope Principal Jonathan Parker that was sent to parents and guardians.
It read, in part:
“On October 15, 2020, the Sunnyslope High School administration was informed that a student athlete involved in the football program tested positive for COVID-19. The individual has not been at football practice since Monday, October 12, 2020. You are receiving this notice because your student athlete may have been in contact with this person. Please monitor the health of your child until October 26, 2020, for any COVID-19 symptoms and seek medical attention if necessary.
“In accordance with current public health guidelines, your student athlete will not be able to attend school in person until October 27, 2020 and the Sunnyslope varsity football team cannot practice or compete through October 26, 2020. Sunnyslope varsity football practice will resume on October 27, 2020.
“Sunnyslope High School is committed to providing a safe environment for all students, employees and visitors. The school has followed all recommended guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Maricopa County Health Department. Any area on campus that the individual may have visited has been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.”
Sunnyslope won its first two games.
This will be the third game that Cactus Shadows will have canceled, unless it can find a replacement opponent next week. Cactus Shadows didn’t play the first two weeks due to a COVID-19 case on its team that put the players in a 14-day quarantine.
