A man died after a shootout and standoff with police officers in Kingman early Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Kingman police received a call that a man, later identified as 45-year-old Jason A. Peters, was using a machete to chop at his neighbor’s bushes that were encroaching on his lawn around 12:30 a.m., according to a statement released by the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

Officers could not locate Peters when they responded to the area, the statement said. Two hours later, police received another call from the same person claiming Peters shot a rifle round through their window. Officers returned to the neighborhood.

The statement alleged Peters shot at responding officers while retreating into his home. For the next several hours, Peters continued to shoot from his windows, hitting police vehicles and neighboring residences.

Finally, at about 5:30 a.m., Peters shot at an officer who returned fire, the statement said. The shooting stopped and the standoff continued until a Lake Havasu Police Department team arrived and found Peters dead in his home.

Peters’ cause of death was not determined as of Wednesday afternoon, pending an autopsy by the county medical examiner. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the incident.

A Kingman police officer was placed on administrative leave.

This is the second death following an alleged shootout with Mohave County law enforcement in a week. On Saturday, Shawn M. Campbell was found dead in Kingman home after exchanging fire with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team during a mental health welfare check.

Campbell appeared to have shot himself when officers found him inside, according to Lake Havasu Police Department, the investigating agency.
