San Tan Valley Combs’ shutting down for at least two weeks because of a number of COVID-19 cases will cause the football team to miss its next two games.
Combs was scheduled to play Cottonwood Mingus on Friday night and Phoenix Arcadia next Thursday.
After Pinal County Health Department advised the school on Wednesday to close down for at least two weeks, the fall sports teams won’t be able to work out or compete during that time.
“We’ve done everything right in the football program,” Combs football coach Travis Miller said. “Followed all of the protocols from day one. Enforced social distancing when possible and mask wearing.
“It’s hard because our boys are paying the price for some cases related to non-football students. I understand safety and doing what’s necessary to slow the spread and I do support it. It’s just hard because we’ve tried to keep the boys focused and safe and we have succeeded so far but it’s crushing to everyone in the program.”
Combs had to scramble two weeks ago to play its opener at home after Cave Creek Cactus Shadows had to cancel because of COVID-19. At the last minute, Combs was able to get Sierra Vista Buena to travel to play. Combs lost that game but bounced back last week with a 47-7 win over Tempe.
“I thought there might be a possibility that we could still practice and play while our school moves back to an all-virtual model like we did at the start of the school year,” Miller said. “We even suggested our players proactively get tested just to be safe. But I guess it isn’t enough. I’m frustrated and hurting for my players.
“We just need to stay focused and ready to play the remaining three games when we come back.”
Schools have to play at least five games in order to qualify for the state playoffs in this COVID-modified football season.
