Gov. Doug Ducey ordered all flags at state buildings to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Flags will remain at half-staff until the day of her internment, which has not been announced, according to the announcement. The call also encourages individuals, businesses and other organizations to also lower their flags to half-staff.

Along with other Arizona leaders recognizing Ginsburg, Ducey praised Ginsburg and offered his condolences.

“During her 27 years on the Supreme Court, her immense intellect, tireless work ethic, and incredible talent as a jurist never waned, nor did her passion for justice. She has inspired generations of young girls and boys and gave us one of the most endearing examples of how to befriend those from across the aisle,” the governor’s statement said.

Ginsburg, who was the second woman to become a Supreme Court justice, died at the age of 87 Friday.

Maricopa County Presiding Judge Joseph Welty also directed flags at all Maricopa County courthouses and court facilities to be flown at half-staff for the next 30 days.

Ducey’s call to lower flags was in coordination with the White House’s proclamation to honor Ginsburg, the statement said.

The White House proclamation orders the lowering of all American flags at the White House, public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations, and all naval vessels of the federal government throughout the U.S. and its’ territories until sunset on the day of her internment.

“A fighter to the end, Justice Ginsburg defeated cancer and the odds numerous times — all while continuing to serve on the Court. Her commitment to the law and her fearlessness in the face of death inspired countless ‘RBG’ fans, and she continues to serve as a role model to countless women lawyers. Her legacy and contribution to American history will never be forgotten,” the White House proclamation said.

The order also directs for flags to be flown at half-staff at all “United States embassies, legations, consular offices and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
