SANTA CLARA – Cardinals players and coaches stayed in the locker room when the national anthem was played prior to their game against the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers were on the field, and the majority of their players stood during the song.

The Cardinals were one of several teams to skip being on the field during the anthem on the NFL’s opening weekend.

No immediate explanation from Cardinals players was available.

NFL players and coaches approached the anthem in a variety of ways on Sunday. Some teams stayed in the locker room during the playing of “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

Some stood with hands over hearts, some locked arms, some raised fists and others kneeled. The Falcons and Seahawks kneeled after their game kicked off.
