There was a time not long ago that A.Q. Shipley could not have risked missing practices because he was on the fringes of roster. That’s not the case now, but the Cardinals’ starting center still isn’t comfortable sitting out.
Shipley underwent surgery three weeks ago to repair a core muscle issue and has missed all of the organized team activities. He is close to full health now and will be ready for training camp, he said.
“Into the offseason, I was feeling it every day. I was going to push through and deal with it,” Shipley said. “But we talked about and everybody decided we didn’t want it to linger into the season.”
Shipley, who entered the NFL in 2009, started every regular-season game last year for the first time in his career. Earlier this year he signed a two-year contract worth $3.5 million, including $725,000 guaranteed.
Cole Toner has been the starting center in offseason practices, but is not a serious threat to take Shipley’s job.
That’s not how Shipley views it, however.
Entering his ninth NFL season, Shipley has been with five teams, so job insecurity is a way of life for him.
“It’s just kind of ingrained in my mind,” he said.
Peterson’s punt returns
Cardinals coaches don’t want Patrick Peterson to be the full-time punt returner, but that’s how things are shaping up this spring.
“Until I get a better one and one I trust back there,” Arians said. “And I do trust Pat.”
As a rookie in 2011, Peterson led the NFL with four returns for touchdowns.
Since then, his numbers have declined. He hasn’t scored since his rookie year and he averaged only 6.2 yards a return last year.
Until someone emerges, however, it’s Peterson’s job.

Arians talks
Here are some highlights from coach Bruce Arians’ post-practice press conference on Thursday. The Cardinals practice for the last time this week on Friday. They have a mandatory minicamp June 6-8 and will break until training camp begins in late July.
- Quarterback Carson Palmer participated fully in practice this week after doing a limited amount of throwing in previous OTAs. “Fantastic,” Arians said of Palmer’s arm. “He looks like he’s 20. Rest obviously did him good.”
- Palmer will take Friday off, Arians said, and then participate in minicamp.
- Receiver John Brown would like to resume returning punts, which he did part-time last year. Receiver J.J. Nelson and Brittan Golden have returned punts, too, and rookie running back T.J. Logan will get a chance to prove he can do it.
- Receiver Chad Williams, the third-round pick out of Grambling, has been impressive but not flawless. Williams needs to learn how to come back to the ball. “In this league, you can’t stand there and wait for it,” Arians said. “He’s got good, strong hands and made a nice play down there for a touchdown. I would have liked to see him make that last catch. It would have been good for his confidence and Carson throwing to him again. I don’t think he’ll throw it to him again for a while in that situation. He’s got to make the catch for the quarterback to come back to you.”
- Arians has been impressed with several young receivers and singled out Carlton Agudosi, a rookie free agent from Rutgers.
