Kareem Orr, Arizona State’s most experienced defensive back, is transferring to Tennessee Chattanooga for personal reasons.
Orr is a junior cornerback from Chattanooga who played 23 games combined as a freshman and sophomore and was expected to start again this season. He had six interceptions in 2015 when he was a freshman All-America and seven in his ASU career plus a combined 91 tackles.
In a social media post Tuesday, Orr said, “I would like to thank ASU for everything they have done for me in these past two years.”
Orr went on to mention ASU coach Todd Graham and others who mentored Orr during his time in Tempe. “With that being said, due to issues that have occurred over the past weeks, I will be transferring from ASU and continuing my journey at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.”
UT Chattanooga plays in the Football Championship Subdivision, which means Orr will be eligible to play this season. The Mocs, who play in the Southern Conference, were 9-4 in 2016 and reached the second round of the FCS playoffs.
Without Orr, ASU’s top cornerbacks coming out of spring are redshirt freshman Chase Lucas and senior Maurice Chandler.
The Sun Devils have six scholarship defensive backs coming in for fall camp — freshmen Langston Frederick, Alex Perry, Evan Fields and K.J. Jarrell and junior college transfers DeMonte King and Kobe Williams.
ASU is investing heavily personnel-wise in its secondary, which ranked last nationally in passing yards allowed in 2015 and 2016. Losing Orr and safety Armand Perry, who recently retired from football due to injury, is a significant setback from an experience standpoint.
