Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi has been suspended for one game for an incident in a game against San Antonio on Friday,
Taurasi hit Stars forward Dearica Hamby in the back of the head with a forearm in the second quarter of a Mercury 78-72 win. She received a technical foul but after further review from the WNBA office the technical was rescinded and the play upgraded to a flagrant foul 2, which carries a one-game suspension without pay.
Taurasi, who is 145 points away from becoming the WNBA career scoring leader, will miss the Mercury’s next game at home Tuesday against New York.
The Mercury are off to a 2-1 start with Taurasi average 11 points and struggling with her shooting — 21.2 percent overall, 22.2 percent 3-point.
Without Taurasi, coach Sandy Brondello could opt to play point guards Danielle Robinson and Leilani Mitchell together as starters. The other Phoenix backup guards are Yvonne Turner, Shay Murphy and rookie Alexis Prince.
Taurasi has been suspended by the WNBA for five previous games — two in 2007 for inappropriate conduct toward game officials, two in 2013 for exceeding two different technical foul limits and one in 2016 for going past the lower technical foul limit. She also missed two games in 2009 for a DUI offense, a penalty imposed by the Mercury and approved by the league.
