About 20 police officers from Arizona will participate in the 2017 Police Unity Tour and ride their bicycles about 280 miles to Washington D.C.
Officers Bryan Rauzan and Brandon Sheffert from the Peoria Police Department will be among those who travel to Portsmouth, Va. on Monday, according to a press release.
The officers will ride their bicycles from Virginia to D.C., where the ride will conclude at the annual Police Week, attended by officers from across the country.
The ride is part of the 2017 police Unity Tour and its primary purpose is to raise awareness of police officers who have fallen in the line of duty. The secondary purpose for the event is to help raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Museum and Memorial.
A vigil will take place during the event and officers will have the opportunity to escort surviving families and represent the Phoenix area at the different events that week.
Each officer used personal funds and raised money in order to make the trip possible, according to the Peoria Police Department.
