Cardinals’ Arians talks free agency and draft
The Cardinals plan to induct former quarterback Jim Hart into their ring of honor at University of Phoenix Stadium this fall, the team announced on Thursday.
Hart will be honored at halftime of a home game to be determined.
Hart joined the then-St. Louis Cardinals in 1966 as an undrafted rookie out of Southern Illinois, receiving a $1,000 signing bonus. He went on to play 18 of his 19 NFL seasons with the team, all while the Cardinals were in St. Louis, and started 180 games.
“I’m very honored to get there with all the other people up there,” Hart said from his home in Naples, Fla. “I wondered if I deserved it.”
Hart’s final year with the Cardinals was 1983, so after 34 years, he wasn’t exactly waiting for his phone to ring with the news. Then he heard the definitive word from the Cardinals last weekend.
“It was OK either way,” he said. “I don’t worry about those things. The guys up there, most of them are Hall of Famers.”
Hart played more seasons with the Cardinals than any other player in franchise history and only five players in NFL history have spent more seasons with one club: Jason Hanson (Lions, 21 seasons), Jackie Slater (Rams, 20 seasons), Darrell Green (Redskins, 20 seasons), Jim Marshall (Vikings, 19 seasons) and Bruce Matthews (Oilers/Titans, 19 seasons).
RELATED: Cardinals have had success with undrafted quarterbacks
Only kicker Jim Bakken (234) and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (202) have appeared in more games with the Cardinals than did Hart (199).
Hart holds Cardinals career records for wins by a quarterback (87), pass attempts (5,069), completions (2,590), passing yards (34,639) and touchdown passes (209). He was selected to four consecutive Pro Bowls (1974-77), the most Pro Bowl selections by a quarterback in team history.
Under head coach Don Coryell, Hart helped the Cardinals to three consecutive 10-win seasons (1974-76) and back-to-back division titles in 1974 and 1975. He led 10 game-winning drives during that three-year span as the team became known as the “Cardiac Cards.”
“The Ring of Honor is reserved for those who have made the most extraordinary contributions to the Cardinals organization and Jim Hart is absolutely in that category,” Cardinals President Michael Bidwill said in a statement. “When you look back at his career, two things really jump out: excellence and longevity. He is our franchise’s career leader in nearly every passing category which is commendable in its own right. But an undrafted quarterback going on to play 18 seasons and 199 games may be ever more remarkable and unlikely to ever be duplicated. The impact he had on the Cardinals was undeniable and we are thrilled that he will have this permanent place of honor within our franchise.”
