Six people were in critical condition after a head-on crash in Phoenix on Friday night, officials said.

The crash happened at 27th Avenue and Indian School Road just before 8:30 p.m.

Initial reports indicated two vehicles collided head-on at the intersection, the Phoenix Fire Department said.

The six people most seriously hurt included three men, ages 70, 24 and 23, and two women, ages 20 and 17, said Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Kenny Overton.

Three people also were treated, with one being taken to a hospital. and two refusing transport to a hospital, Overton said.

Numerous Phoenix police and fire crews were at the scene, and traffic was blocked in the area.

Joseluis Garcia, 22, said he called 911 when he saw multiple people rush over and try to get a driver out of one of the vehicles. He also saw two people on the ground, including a woman who was yelling.

Two other witnesses were at a nearby bus stop when the accident occurred.

Delancey Turner, 23, said he heard a tire “pop” and then saw a vehicle veer out of control, striking two other vehicles.

Sean Jackson, 56, said he ran over and saw three people trapped in a vehicle. He helped remove them and lay them on the ground until paramedics arrived.
