A 5-year-old boy who was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition after being pulled from a Phoenix pool almost two weeks ago has died, according to family.

Andrew Ibarra was pronounced brain dead at the hospital, according to a GoFundMe campaign shared with TheArizona Republic by his aunt, Brenda Calvillo. She offered no additional information about Ibarra Wednesday.

“Andrew’s mom has had to take time off of work given the circumstances and will have a huge financial strain with the upcoming expenses and also having three other little ones to care for,” the GoFundMe states. “We ask for any support for our family during our time of grief. Anything is appreciated.”

The GoFundMe campaign raised $3,802 of its $10,000 goal by Wednesday evening.

Phoenix and Glendale fire crews responded to a home Aug. 30 near Olive and 47th avenues about 8:25 p.m. for reports of a drowning, officials stated. Upon arrival, they found a 5-year-old boy who was not breathing after being pulled from a pool, according to officials.

No additional details were provided at the time. Phoenix and Glendale fire departments did not immediately respond to inquiries Wednesday.

In a post on Facebook, Julie Michels Even stated that Ibarra was one of her students. The woman’s post said she works as a kindergarten teacher at Alta Vista Elementary School in Glendale.

She said the child was taken off life support on Sept. 6 and “passed away peacefully.”

“(There) are no words for how I feel right now. I so appreciate all of you and the space and time you have given me to get myself together,” she said. “As heartbroken as I am I still (cannot) imagine how Andrew’s family is doing right now. They are my first concern. I promise I will protect my kids and we will all get through this together.”

Even also shared Ibarra’s GoFundMe campaign on her Facebook page.

Ainel Espéndez Cuevas created a video on Facebook Sept. 7 stating that she was attending a food fundraiser for Ibarra but offered no additional details. In a previous Facebook post, she stated that it was a funeral fundraiser.
