Three 14-year-old boys were arrested Monday after school officials received a report that a loaded handgun was pointed at a girl at Mesa High School, police said Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the school last Friday, but was reported by the girl Monday morning, Mesa police said.

Two of the boys suspected of together threatening the girl with the gun admitted to officers their involvement in the incident, according to Mesa police.

While talking with officers the boys identified a third boy who had the handgun on him at the school, police said.

Officers found the boy and searched his backpack, then learned he had taken the handgun home over the weekend before bringing it back onto the Mesa High campus, police said.

Police said it was not clear why the boys pointed the gun at the girl and why she waited to report the incident.

Two boys each are facing one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct, reckless display of a firearm, possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school campus, police said.

The third boy was charged with one count possession of a firearm under 21 and possession of a firearm on a school campus.

Mesa Public Schools officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Tuesday.

The school is located on Southern Avenue just west of Gilbert Road.
