Three people were killed in a head-on collision in Arizona City Monday afternoon, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said.

Durrell Smith, 26, was traveling south on Sunland Gin Road near Battaglia Drive when his vehicle crossed over the center lane and crashed head-on into a Ford SUV with two people inside, around 2:30 p.m., officials said.

The passenger of the SUV, Joyce McNeil, 83, and Smith were pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. James McNeil, 83, the driver of the SUV, was flown to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Office said the accident still was under investigation Monday evening. Impairment was not a factor, officials added.

The Sheriff’s Office said all three were not wearing their seatbelts, which contributed to their deaths.

The collision caused the closure of Sunland Gin between West Battaglia Drive and West Houser during the investigation.

Arizona City is located about midway between Phoenix and Tucson, west of Interstate 10 in Pinal County.
