Two people have died following a multiple-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Interstate 17 in north Phoenix.

The fatal crash was one of three that occurred in the same area of I-17 on Monday morning, causing significant delays during the Monday morning commute. There was no time estimate for when southbound I-17 would reopen near Loop 101.

Three people were reported to be ejected in the fatal crash at about 5 a.m. close to the Yorkshire Drive overpass. Of five patients in the crash, two people died, a 52-year-old man was taken to a hospital in serious condition, a 40-year-old man was said to be in critical condition, and the fifth was treated at the scene, said Phoenix fire Captain Reda Bigler.

A second crash in the area did not result in injuries, officials said.

The third crash took place on northbound I-17 near Loop 101 at about 6:30 a.m. and blocked most lanes, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Details on any injuries were not immediately available.
