Two people were killed and four hurt in a rollover collision that closed northbound State Route 87 near Gilbert Road early Thursday.

Only one vehicle was involved in the crash, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Trooper Quentin Mehr said a Jeep was headed south on the Beeline Highway at about 3:22 a.m. when the driver lost control and ran off the road, flipping the vehicle.

One person was ejected, Mehr said.

The driver and a female passenger died at the scene and four others, three of whom were critically injured, were taken to hospitals.

Mehr said one of the passengers has since been released from medical care.

Northbound lanes of the Beeline Highway were closed for much of the morning commute but reopened to traffic at about 8:30 a.m.

Mehr said the crash investigation is ongoing.
