A 10-year-old boy died and a 9-year-old boy was injured when the ATV they were riding on struck a parked vehicle on Saturday afternoon in Phoenix, police officials said.

The two boys were riding on a quad and hit the vehicle about 1:30 p.m. in the area of South 16th and West Wier avenues, according to an email statement from Sgt. James Rothschild of the Phoenix Police Department.

Police say both boys were riding the quad westbound on West Wier Avenue from South 15th Avenue, according to a police statement. The ATV veered to the left and struck an unoccupied, legally parked vehicle on the south side of Wier Avenue.

Both boys were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The 9-year-old boy, who was not identified by police, is now in serious but stable condition, according to Rothschild.

The 10-year-old boy, identified as Thomas Martinez, was the operator of the ATV, police say.

Weir Avenue is closed to traffic from 15th to 17th avenues.

The Phoenix Police Department is handling the ongoing investigation.
