A 1-year-old boy has died from injuries suffered when he was attacked by a dog Friday afternoon in south Phoenix, police said.

The boy was attacked at about 1:20 p.m. in the 1900 block of East Sunland Avenue, according to Phoenix fire spokesman Capt. Rob McDade.

The child was taken to a pediatric trauma hospital in “extremely critical condition,” McDade said.

Phoenix police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune confirmed the child died at the hospital.

Phoenix police were at the scene investigating.

The dog is a Rottweiler that belonged to the family, said Melissa Gable, spokeswoman for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

The agency responded to the house and took the dog to its Phoenix facility, where it remained Friday afternoon while police investigated, Gable said.

The agency will defer to Phoenix police to determine what will happen to the dog, Gable said.
