A woman was killed and a man left critically injured when they were ejected from a motorcycle early Tuesday near South Mountain.

The man lost control of the motorcycle and struck a median. Officials said they are investigating speed and impairment as likely factors.

It happened in the area of 28th Street and Baseline Road at about 3 a.m. The motorcycle had been headed eastbound at the time.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard with Phoenix police said the female passenger died on scene. The driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
