One person is dead and another is critically injured after being struck by a vehicle Thursday morning in Gilbert.

Police said two people were crossing the roadway near Val Vista Drive and Elliot Road when they were hit by a vehicle.

Gilbert Fire Department said in a tweet that the surviving pedestrian was flown to a trauma facility.

A body remained at the scene of the accident next to a black Toyota truck with obvious damage to the driver’s side. A lone shoe laid in the roadway behind the truck.

The intersection was closed in all directions and police are directing cars to side roads to get around.
